Narrative Shoot - Lucy Fry

Series of ‘Lucy Fry’

We were deeply inspired by a number of works by several different creatives from directors to photographers. These creatives include Alex Prager for her strong highly constructed narrative works and her amazing vision and this quote in particular:
“I think that’s one of the reasons it’s nice to leave out a lot; it can become a lot more personal to people if there is room for them to put their own experiential time track on it."

David Shama for his raw almost candid shots and the works of Sarah Bahbah for raised by the wolves which have a strong narrative through a series of images which have also been captioned much like subtitles.

We then looked into Wes Anderson films as his cinematography is so rich and also very relevant. Based off our previous narrative piece and research we decided to carry on with a strong theme we have been exploring for our final body or work. This theme derived from our many inspirations tells the story of a moment in time for a young girl.

Highly designed and constructed we wanted to have a nostalgic essence to our series reminiscent of the 70’s. This factor is what helped to add more character to our storyline.

Although we would like the audience to create their own ideas in regards to the story of each image, we developed a persona for our subject ‘Lucy’ that helped create a narrative in the scenes we have displayed. Traits included snobby, curious, inquisitive, nervous, sassy, bored, alert, intolerant, attractive, messy, charming, mistaken, dreamy, moody, cleaver, unsure, obsessive, intense and dramatic.

As a large portion of our inspiration was derived for the works of Alex Prager, we wanted to visually light the scenes in a similar way. High contrast with a lot of shadows and an abundance of colour. Colour was a major theme in our shots. From the setting of each location down to the outfit, hair and makeup of our model. After initially wanting to use 2 main light sources, one with a softbox. We found using only one light at about 6 with a soft box was what helped us to achieve this look we were going for.
